How long would it take an experience web programmer?
How long would it take an experience web programmer to build a website which is similar in complexity and functionality as the site ebay.com
Let me clarify a few points. I am not trying to copy ebay, although one of my ideas is an auction site, I have many others. Most of my ideas for websites are probably similar to the complexity of the ebay site.
Also, If I were going to proceed with a project I wouldn’t necessarily hire just one programmer, it’s just to get an idea. Perhaps a better question to ask would be: “how many man hours would it take”

Building a website similar to ebay.com is not a one man’s job, even if they’re experienced. It’s a lot of work.
To build a similar site though, or any project for that matter, you need to start small. It’s a huge mistake to try and do everything on the first try. Even Ebay didn’t become what it is today overnight. So it’s not a matter of how long it takes to build a similar site, it’s about how long are you willing to wait until what you build becomes as big as ebay.com
In order to start your small auction site, you need an auction script, you can pay for one of those, or get one of the free scripts. Promote, promote, and promote some more, once you get your base customers, that’s really when the fight begins (increase functionality/complexity), eventually you’ll become as big as Ebay.
