Web Design With Flash Tutorial

web design interest?
I am interested in becoming a web designer. I dont have the money for school right now, so I want to teach myself as much as i possibly can untill i can get to school.
My questions to you.
1. If you are a web designer, what school did u go to, or how did you learn what you know.
2. what books/programs/languages would you recomend learning.
Im already pretty good with photoshop and dreamweaver. I want to learn flash but it seems so difficult to self teach. any good books or tutorials out there?
Im really just looking for some good advice and some help in where i should get started. what are some things i can do now, untill i get to school so i can be as prepared as possible.
I took various classes, but all they were really good for was getting me pointed in the right direction. If you can use Dreamweaver and Photoshop, then don’t expect to get any better at them from a class.
A good web designer has to know HTML, not just a program like Dreamweaver which creates the HTML for you. Once you understand the basic HTML, learn CSS, and then JavaScript. This will put you ahead of the game.
If you’re going to be doing interactive websites, you can either go the Flash route, or learn a server-side language like PHP (and you’ll have to pick up some SQL on the way).
Anyway, there are classes in these interactive technologies, but all they’ll really do is get you started. To do real websites you’re going to go beyond whatever the classes cover. For that you need real references. (I’ve found the books assigned in most of my classes to be barely useful outside the classes.)
As for books, there are LOTS of them. I’d suggest you go to a big bookstore (Barnes & Noble, etc) and leaf through them and pick ones that match your style. I personally like the Peachpit Press books, others might like the O’Reilly series or the Whatever for Dummies books, or other series or authors.
The last thing is just keep on coding websites. You don’t have to put them online, but challenge yourself and make things work, both programming-wise and design wise.
